In most cases we will extract the key without removing the lock. If necessary, we will remove the ignition, strip it down and then extract the key.

What to do if your key snaps
Do not try to start the car with the broken piece still in the lock, and avoid pushing anything into the lock that could cause damage. Call a professional auto locksmith as soon as possible.
Warning signs include a key that is difficult to turn, sticks in the ignition, or shows hairline cracks in the blade. Replacing a worn key early is far quicker and cheaper than a difficult extraction.

Can the broken key fragment damage the lock barrel?+
The fragment itself rarely damages the barrel unless it's been forced in deeply or twisted. The greater risk comes from DIY extraction attempts — particularly superglue or tools that push the fragment further in. If you've already tried extraction, tell us when you call so we can bring the right equipment.
What if the key broke in the ignition rather than the door lock?+
Ignition barrel extraction requires extra care because the ignition connects to the vehicle's electrical system. Ian and Adam are experienced in ignition extractions. In most cases extraction is completed without barrel removal, but if the barrel is damaged we can advise on replacement at the same visit.
Will I be able to use the lock normally after extraction?+
In the majority of cases, yes. If the key broke cleanly without being forced or rotated, the barrel pins are usually undamaged and the lock works normally with a new key. We always test the lock before we leave.
Why did my key break in the lock?+
Keys most commonly break due to metal fatigue from repeated bending stress — particularly keys that have been dropped, sat on, or have a previous bend. Forcing a worn or incorrectly cut key is another common cause. A fresh, precisely cut replacement is always recommended after extraction.
Can you extract a broken key if I can still turn the ignition partially?+
Yes, though this requires a different approach as the barrel may be partially engaged. Do not force the ignition further — this can cause internal damage. Leave it in position and call us.
